Plot Summary
Joy is a inspiring story about a woman who despite all her failures and hardships, she managed to turn the odds in her favor by making a mop. The first-ever Self-wringing Mop that changed her life extensively more than she ever imagined.
What can you learn from the movie?
This movie is a good example that women can be Alpha-Female or Matriarch. Imagine all the hardships and failures that she experienced in life she managed to be successful.
The inspiring story of Joy Mangano is inspiring and motivational, due to her creativeness and determination she was able to make the odds turn in her favor.
Everyone is born with creativity skills
All of us are born with creativeness, we just have to have that determination to nurture them as we grow up.
Many people thought that “Creativeness” is a skill that is taught and learned in school. But the truth is, creativeness is a basic human trait. We are born with it.
However, If you think about it, even pre-historic humans are creativity plays a huge role in their lives. See how they were able to create tools and weapons for survival by just using random resources like wood, leaves, and roots of trees.
In the book by Agustin Fuentes called The Creative Spark: How Imagination Made Humans Exceptional. He argued, that creativity is the secret that what makes humans special, We just don’t see it.
He mentioned that “If a child’s finger painting comes essentially from the same place as creativity in hunting and gathering millions of years ago.
Throughout history in making war and peace, in intimate relationships, in shaping the planet, in our communities, and all of art, religion, and even science.
It requires imagination and collaboration. Every poet has her muse; An engineer has an architect; every politician has a constituency.
The manner of the collaborations varies widely, but successful collaboration is inseparable from imagination.
And it brought us everything from knives and hot meals to iPhones and interstellar spacecraft and weaving fascinating stories of our ancient ancestors’ creativity”.
Fuentes finds the patterns that match modern behavior in humans and animals. This key quality has contributed to humanity’s evolutionary development of our bodies, minds, and cultures, both for good and for bad.
That It’s not just the drive primarily to reproduce, nor competition for mates, or find resources, or claim power; nor our propensity for caring for one another that have separated us from other creatures on Earth.
Turn your worse experience into something that can help other people
Joy Mangano was recognized as an inventor because of the revolutionary mop that she invented. But what is the main purpose of this idea? It’s because of her experience of having so much trouble rinsing and wringing the traditional mop.
I remember during our “Creativity Workshop“ which was under the training of CIA Bootleg Manila is a branch organization from its main business body called Creative Intelligence Associates (CIA), Tokyo’s oldest and most successful brand consultancy firm which is known for outstanding branding innovation that they made for improving businesses like Uniqlo, Nike, Giordano, and many more.
During our training under Professor Aaron Palileo, who is an associate guru at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business’ Master. Prof A mentioned in his training the word “Scamper“. This is a productive technique, where you Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify/Magnify, Put to other use (Purpose), Eliminate, Reverse/Rearrange the current concepts/features to generate a new feature or product.
According to an article in innovationmanagement.se by Paul Sloan, He defined the following words as the following:
- Substitute: What elements of this product or service can we substitute?
- Combine: How can we combine this with other products or services?
- Adapt: What idea from elsewhere can we alter or adapt?
- Maximize or minimize: How can we greatly enlarge or greatly reduce any component?
- Put to other use: What completely different use can we have for our product?
- Eliminate: What elements of the product or service can be eliminated?
- Rearrange or reverse: How can we rearrange the product or reverse the process?
Here are some examples of how the “SCAMPER” verbs work for innovation:
- If you were making spectacles then you could substitute plastic lenses for glass (incremental innovation) or you could substitute contact lenses for spectacles (radical innovation).
- A mobile phone was combined with a camera and then an MP3 player.
- The roll-on deodorant was an idea adapted from the ballpoint pen.
- Restaurants that offer all you can eat have maximized their proposition.
- A low-cost airline like Ryanair has minimized (or eliminated) many elements of service.
- De Beers put industrial diamonds on other users when they launched engagement rings.
- Dell Computers and Amazon eliminated the intermediary.
- McDonald’s rearranged the restaurant by getting customers to pay first and then eat.

By using the “Scamper” technique, you will be able to see a different perspective on your product or service.
And it will help you find ways to improve and innovate which can lead to creating a new form of a product or service coming from the existing features.
They were able to innovate and cope up with the change in technology and customer behavior, making their business run for many years.
If the business manages to cope up with technology and market behavior it will succeed, this was proven by Apple and Samsung both are titans when it comes to innovation in technology.
An example of a company that failed to cope up with technology and market behavior is Nokia. Which they even admitted that change defeated them.
However, since Nokia was bought by Microsoft. They are back to business and catching up when it comes to technology. What can we say? It’s Bill Gates we’re talking about.
They will laugh at you and will not support you, but who cares, there is no shame in hard work
There was a time in the movie that Joy’s daughter telling her that she is feeling ashamed. Because Lauren Wells is saying that Joy is a cleaning lady and sells used mops. And that it hurts her feelings.
Joy responded, “So what if I am a cleaning lady, there’s no shame in hard work.” Joy continues “Don’t take any guff from anybody, Don’t let them in“.
Though it sucks that some of them came from her own family’s mouth.
However, Just like Joy did. We can still move forward and eventually we will succeed.
We all know that this “Crab Mentality” is always present every time someone is moving to the top.
Let them say whatever they want, just stay focused on your goals, always remember “your success silences the envious people“.
Dedicate your work to change and help other people
Joy dedicated her work to people like her who struggled in life because of challenges and failure that is her Purpose.
People who became successful started with Purpose-driven ideas. Their dedication to helping other people.
Just like how Joy did when she made her mop. She made it based on her experiences and changed it into something that can benefit mothers just like her.
But sadly the business people are mocking her presentation, which leads Bradley Cooper to explain that their job is the deflect people like Joy.
Who wanted to start a small business and get into the retail market, a test to funnel and see who is deserving.
After Cooper’s explanation, Joy said “I don’t know about charts and business frankly, but I do clean my own home, and I made this mop because it is better than anything else out there.”
Therefore, we can learn from this scene that every time we make a product or service, let us consider the question “How can this help other people?“
According to Simon Sinek’s book called “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action“. Sinek emphasizes doing your work or making something that is driven by Purpose.
He explained that companies and people who are driven by Purpose most likely will succeed. because it reaches the limbic system part of our brain.
Which functions are related to Emotions and Decision-Making, as well as Motivation.
Which if people start with their Why or Purpose, they will attract more people to follow them because it triggers the limbic system of other people too. It creates a commonality of purposes.
